Science

In Science, we want all pupils to develop a lifelong curiosity and interest in the subject. We also want all pupils to have the opportunity, wherever possible, to learn through varied systematic investigations and practical activities, leading to them being equipped for life to ask and answer scientific questions about the world around them. As pupils progress through the year groups, they build on their skills in working scientifically, as well as on their scientific knowledge. We want them to develop greater independence in planning and carrying out fair and comparative tests to answer a range of scientific questions. The Science scheme of work ensures that our pupils have a varied, progressive and well mapped-out Science curriculum that provides the opportunity for progression across the full breadth of the National Curriculum for Science.

The teaching, learning and activities cover a wide range of topic areas including:

  • Animals, including humans
  • Plants
  • Living things and their habitats
  • Light
  • Forces and magnets
  • Seasonal changes
  • Materials (including everyday materials, rocks, states of matter and properties and changes of materials)
  • Evolution and inheritance
  • Earth and space
  • Sound
  • Electricity

The principles of working scientifically are embedded in all lessons and activities. Work is displayed around the school and is used as part of the school’s Topic Showcase events.
