Reading

We intend for pupils to participate in daily reading activities and teaching. Through a range of activities and methods, the pupils are able to practise a range of reading skills both individually and as a small group that will promote a love of reading and encourage the ability to read a range of texts confidently and independently. Through a variety of teaching activities, pupils will be exposed to a range of whole texts and excerpts in a range of genres across fiction and non-fiction.

Direct teacher-led lessons enable all learners to develop and apply new skills while also providing opportunities to further apply these skills within fun and engaging activities and through continuous provision.

Pupils take part in the following reading activities on a weekly basis:

·         Whole class reader (at least 3 times per week)

·         Guided reading (once per week)

·         DEAR (Drop Everything And Read) Time (at least once per week)

·         Reading journal activities (through Guided Reading and other reading activities)

The whole class reader is an opportunity for classes to read and experience a range of texts that they may not be able to access independently but are able to understand and discuss as part of a class group. These sessions are aimed at increasing the pupils’ experience of a range of literature and develop their love of books and reading. These will usually be texts that are read to the pupils.

Guided reading sessions are taught in small groups or class groups and are planned and delivered in line with ongoing teacher assessment to develop the individual skills of the pupils in the different areas of the reading curriculum. They may be based on the Class Reader texts, separate whole texts, excerpts or short films.

DEAR Time is an opportunity for staff and pupils to spend some time reading for pleasure. This can be reading material from home or school and does not have to be a book. The purpose of this session is to allow pupils and staff to spend some time enjoying reading alongside each other.

All pupils have a reading journal where they carry out reading activities and respond to the books and texts that they have read. This may be during guided reading sessions or other lessons.

The Stables School Reading Challenge

All children participate in a termly Reading Challenge at home, which is participated in over several weeks. This encourages the children to read a variety of texts, genres and use reading as a life skill and engages carers in participating in a range of reading activities with the children.
