RE/PHSRE

RE

RE lessons are intended to offer a broad and rich learning experience beyond the coverage of the areas prescribed (as set by the Diocese of Norwich). Pupils explore different religions and beliefs and diversity in their own communities and within the whole world. Pupils will be able to identify, investigate and respond to a variety of issues. SMSC, personal growth and community cohesion are featured throughout the learning and there are opportunities for pupils to develop positive attitudes and values and to reflect on and relate their learning in RE to their own experiences. The intent is to make our pupils understand the relevance of RE in today’s modern world and how it affects our lives. Where possible, we intend for the pupils to experience first-hand the major world religions and places of worship within our local community and arrange visits and speakers to complement the learning.

PHSRE

Our PHSRE curriculum aims to equip our pupils with essential skills for life. Pupils learn how to stay safe and healthy, build and maintain successful relationships and become active citizens, responsibly participating in society around them. Our PHSRE curriculum coverage is a vital tool in preparing pupils for life in society now and in the future. Our lessons, with their core question approach, have their foundations in seeing each and everybody’s value in society.

We want our pupils to develop their identity and increase their self-esteem, and to become active and confident members of of their community. The themes and topics support social, moral, spiritual and cultural development and provide pupils with protective teaching on essential safeguarding issues.

The lessons follow the learning outcomes and core themes provided by the PSHE Association programme of study which is widely used by schools in England and is recommended and referred to by the DfE. This scheme of work and the resources cover all the required objectives of the National Curriculum and follow the three core areas of: Health & Wellbeing, Relationships, and Living in the Wider World.

Pupils participate in Zones of Regulation lessons. These lessons help build resilience and encourage pupils to explore their own emotions and behaviours as well as developing coping strategies, all of which are necessary for their future success.

We want to support our pupils to develop their understanding of issues regarding Health, Relationships and Sex Education. We teach our pupils about the body, feelings, beliefs, values and attitudes. We want to empower our pupils to build self-esteem, offer positive and open views and support mutual respect and celebration of self and others, providing a strong foundation to being successful in life by:

*promoting the development of knowledge relevant to the age and stage of the learner

*providing an inclusive learning environment which is safe and empowering for everyone involved

*providing non-biased, accurate and factual information that is positively inclusive

*developing character skills to support healthy and safe relationships, ensuring comfortable communication about emotions, bodies and relationships, and using appropriate terminology

*promoting critical awareness of differing attitudes and views presented through society, the media and peers to enable the nurturing of personal values based on respect

*providing protection from shock or guilt

*ensuring our pupils are informed of their rights, including the legal framework and how to access confidential help to keep themselves and others safe

PHSRE is most effective when it is in collaboration between school and home. The school operates an open-door policy enabling parents and carers to discuss any issues or concerns around PHSRE at any time throughout the school year.
